New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, hesitated to declare this decision immediately following his triumph in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the imperative to directing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

However his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.

With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
