Academy players were previously a relatively rare sight on PSG matchday squads.

Until recent seasons, the club's Middle Eastern investment was spearheaded by high-profile signings from elsewhere.

The Transformation in Strategy

Several PSG's talented youth graduates during those years, such as Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, departed the club before breaking through in the Parisian setup.

The team's turn towards local players in current campaigns has witnessed the emergence of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue lead last year's historic campaign.

Building From Within

Now, PSG are aiming to advance their strategy and develop around their own homegrown talent, a transformation that has been accelerated by an early-season injury crisis.

Due to Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the long-term absentees, there have been as many as five youth products - all from the Paris area - in the starting lineup this season.

Modern Academy Complex

The team's all-encompassing training and academy complex has been key to this approach.

Two years ago, PSG relocated from the previous facilities to the nearby state-of-the-art PSG Campus.

The recently opened complex, which were publicly launched a last year, accommodate the senior squads along with their respective youth sides over a large area.

This comprises multiple training fields, accommodation for academy talents, learning centers and even a organic garden.

Long-term Planning

At an gathering to commemorate the half-century milestone of the youth system's establishment, technical director Luis Campos explained that the team's future strategy were to incorporate "increasing numbers of players from the local region" in the main roster.

"The philosophy is to have talents in each development level who can climb the steps the system," states Campos.

A straighter trajectory from the development program to the main roster can also reduce the organization's need on the player acquisitions, the technical director highlighted.

For Campos, "going to the supermarket regularly doesn't make you a more skilled culinary artist."

"The key factor is to be progressing in the correct path, not to hoard prospects," he adds.

Talent Progression

The ex-Ligue 1 executive also described a session between Luis Enrique and the development team, in which the Spaniard outlined his "principles of play" rather than imposing exact training methods or formations to follow.

The manager's appointment previously, Campos explains, was particularly supported by "willingness to play youth prospects as soon as they develop."

Rising Stars

Versus Barcelona in October, it was Senny Mayulu, who spearheaded the attack and scored in PSG's impressive 2-1 victory.

Warren Zaire-Emery, Quentin Ndjantou and Ibrahim Mbaye were also featured in the victory over the Catalans, while young Mathis Jangeal was in the squad, having made his senior debut a short time earlier.

Mayulu, who registered the concluding goal in the continental decider victory over Inter in May, has been among the early success stories of the changed approach.

Adaptable Talent

The 19-year-old midfielder, a midfielder by trade, particularly attributes his 50 first-team games to his versatility.

After beginning in each Ligue 1 fixture since the late summer, Mayulu has been positioned across the pitch, from defensive duties, to central midfield, to striker position.

Academy Leadership

Yohan Cabaye has been the overseer of the development program since 2024, having originally joined the youth set-up following the completion of his football journey.

The former France midfielder praises extensively Mayulu, highlighting the way he returned strongly from injury several times in his formative years.

"When he initially joined the academy, he was struggling to complete full seasons," Cabaye explains. "He demonstrated such resilience that he repeatedly recovered, though."

Exceptional Talent

Zaire-Emery, as the experienced midfielder characterizes him, is an exception.

"He cannot serve as an benchmark, if we did you'd have 20 16-year-olds knocking on Luis Enrique's attention," he explains.

Currently in his fourth year in the main roster, the emerging talent has been leading the affected Parisians from an growing accustomed full-back duty.

Improved Display

After struggling through periods during last season, the Les Bleus representative is regaining the explosive form that first saw him break into the professional setup.

Having also returned to the Les Bleus squad recently, the Paris native explained his time with the under-21 national team assisted in regaining his self-belief.

"I concentrated on my development, I persisted and maintained dedication," he explained before the game with Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG have gained advantages, with Zaire-Emery serving as the primary representative once again for the latest academy products of Parisians.

External Attention

A key part of maximizing the local player resources is combating approaches by rival teams.

Employing full-time scouts observing junior competitions in the metropolitan area, PSG are seeking to strengthen their foothold on the hotbed of talent at their local area, from which their French and continental competitors have traditionally acquired players.

Youth Success

Should junior competition performances are a reliable guide, PSG will not be short of talents to advance in the future seasons.

The development squad won the competition again this recent campaign and have excelled during the international tournaments, which has predictably generated attention from the outside.

"Regularly present between multiple observers from domestic and international clubs coming to our academy matches," Cabaye explains.</
