Weather Balloons Used to Contraband Cigarettes Shut Down Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
No fewer than 11 of the weather balloons, carrying 18,000 packages of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

Illegal Goods Seizure

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.

International Illegal Trade

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Criminal Methodology

In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.

Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
