Volcano Mahameru Eruption in the Southeast Asian nation Triggers Evacuations
Indonesia's Semeru volcano, the highest peak on Java island, has exploded, covering multiple communities with volcanic ash, leading to evacuations and causing officials to elevate the warning to the maximum level.
The volcano in East Java province unleashed blistering plumes of hot ash and a combination of rock, lava and gas that travelled up to 4 miles down its sides several times from noon to evening, while a thick column of fiery clouds rose 1.2 miles into the sky, according to Indonesia’s Geology Agency.
The eruptions that occurred throughout the day forced authorities to raise the volcano’s alert level on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the highest, the agency said. No casualties have been announced.
Over three hundred inhabitants in the three communities most endangered in the district of Lumajang region were evacuated to official safe havens, as mentioned by a representative for the national emergency management body.
He stated that increased activity of the mountain on the afternoon of Wednesday prompted authorities to widen the hazard area to 5 miles from the crater. Residents were advised to stay clear from an zone along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the route of the lava flow, as scorching gases flowed down Semeru’s slopes.
Footage on online platforms showed a thick plume of volcanic dust sweeping through a forested valley to a waterway beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces covered with volcanic dust and water, fled to makeshift refuges or left for alternative secure locations.
Regional news outlets reported that emergency teams were struggling to save about 178 individuals stranded on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group included 137 climbers, 15 carriers, seven guides and six travel representatives, according to an official with the national park.
“They are currently safe at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” an official stated in a recorded message. He said the station was situated 2.8 miles from the summit on the north side of the mountain, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was observed moving to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation forced the team to spend the night there, he explained.
The volcano, also called Mahameru, has erupted many occasions in the last two centuries. Still, as is the case with many of the 129 live volcanoes in Indonesia, thousands of people still to reside on its productive highlands.
The mountain's last major eruption was in December 2021, when 51 people were killed and hundreds others were burned and settlements were buried in layers of mud. The event led to the evacuation of over ten thousand people from their houses.
Indonesia, an island chain of over 280 million people, is located along the Pacific seismic belt, a horseshoe-shaped series of fault lines, and is prone to seismic events and volcanic activity.
