The Three Lions to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will embark on their 2028 European Championship campaign at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they attain the expected qualification for a championship hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an Three Lions match since May 2016, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to stage the Three Lions for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.
The team are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning their group, their knockout stage opener would be held at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Launch and Protest
The tournament was launched at an event in central London on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from Uefa and the host FAs were heckled as they approached the venue by approximately 50 activists, who demanded Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the situation in Gaza.
Placards were displayed with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The opening game of the tournament will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will involve the Dragons if they make it.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be used for European club finals from the upcoming season, will cater to households and help reach a more diverse set of audiences.
Qualifying Teams
The Irish team are scheduled to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through that route.
Stadiums and Playoffs
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals played at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a venue city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be renovated in time, on 6 December 2026.
