The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
