New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
