Leeds Hold Liverpool at Bay to Secure Hard-Fought Draw at Anfield
Two undefeated runs continued intact at Anfield, but solely one side could derive real satisfaction from the outcome. Daniel Farke's men carried out a textbook strategy of stifling and restricting the hosts, with the maiden scoreless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the lingering issues within the reigning title holders' latest upturn.
Resolute Display Secures Crucial Point
A drab goalless draw, the first in 84 fixtures for Slot's team, was largely attributable to the immense solidity of the excellent centre-back pairing Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, combined with the home side's failure to break down a compact Leeds unit. Liverpool were reduced to speculative opportunities, and a sprinkling of discontent echoed around the famous ground at the full-time whistle on a sluggish performance.
"If I do not use the entire squad and we have a schedule like this, I would never do this," Daniel Farke explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all are aware his past couple of years was challenging. He is in red-hot form but it's important I manage him and sometimes the mind needs to win over the emotion."
The Hosts' Frustration in the Final Third
Liverpool at first displayed more energy and sharpness than in previous matches, with Jeremie Frimpong influential on the right side. Nevertheless, clear-cut opportunities were scarce. The home side's best openings in the first half involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- After a neat one-two with Curtis Jones, the France international drifted infield and drew a stop from goalkeeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The visitors' shot-stopper spilled the effort, requiring a crucial intervention from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz converting the rebound.
- Ekitiké later raced clear onto a long ball but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; although staying on his feet, his appeals for a penalty were dismissed.
Spurned Chances Are Costly
Ekitiké's afternoon worsened when he failed to hit the net with his best opening. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the attacker miscued a glance that struck the Perri while facing an open goal.
At the other end, their most notable sight of goal arrived from an Liverpool goalkeeper mistake. The Brazilian keeper sent a careless pass straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort back towards goal was gathered by the alert goalkeeper.
Turgid Final Stages
The contest deteriorated into a bitty affair, low on incident. Dominik Szoboszlai, returning from suspension, tested Perri from range. The subsequent scramble resulted in Ampadu controlling the ball, giving Liverpool a set-piece in a dangerous position, which Wirtz sent into the defence.
The Liverpool manager made a three substitution to inject urgency, and soon after Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to heading his team in front from a set-piece, his effort flying just past the post.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had extended his scoring run for the visitors in the closing stages, but his tap-in was ruled out for a marginal offside. Ultimately, both sides had to accept a share of the points.
