The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind assisted us verify the video.

Our team is analyzing images and video posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
