Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
