Arne Slot Insists He Feels Secure and Has Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his future following another convincing loss against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's poorest run since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a difficult evening at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I have got significant support from above,” the coach commented.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory naturally but when you're working as a coach and struggling then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I accept my situation. This isn't the initial instance I’ve been in a challenging situation but it is about time that we improved our results.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to provide details on his conversations with the team officials, Slot said:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive for the squad and for me and we discuss these matters but they don't phone me constantly of the day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “During our regular conversations we have I perceive the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Failings and Player Response
Slot lamented known shortcomings from his team in their European loss, specifically missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was blunter in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody,” the midfielder stated.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond getting mad inside. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It's tough because I’m playing for the side I follow. I’m a fan, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a period like this with results this poor.”
He finished, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And until that badge is removed, we’re always going to compete.”
“We’re going to try to get this team return to where it needs to be, prove again what this club is about and why it's known as the best team in the world.”
“However currently, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
